It was obvious, even before I answered the door, who the two middle-aged women were who'd knocked. Neatly dressed in that 60ish suburban mum style, brochures in hand and smallish kiddy in tow they wanted to tell me about Jesus.

I'm all for the exchange of ideas and healthy debate. The problem with the door-knocking proselytizers is that they're not into mutual dialogue or the consideration of alternative perspectives. It's all one-way. I declared straight up to the two ladies that I was a convinced atheist. To their credit they didn't flee the property, cover the child's ears or attempt to sprinkle me with holy waters or a cleansing waft of incense. That's the Catholics apparently. I enquired as to their own chosen flavour of Jesus;

Mormons no less - one consonant too many in my view but they were at least polite.

To settle their credentials I asked whether, as Mormons, they were creationists, believing that the universe is about 6,000 years old which they happily conceded. Now, there are far too many flaws in their dogma to seek to cover more than, say, one sample. So I ran with the 'age of the universe' -

"When you look up at the night sky you can see many millions of stars, right?"

"Yes, all part of God's creation."

"And they're all far away - Alpha Centauri, the closest,  is several light years away, right?"

"Yeeees...." Cautiously.

"Most of what you see though is millions of light years away"

Blank look

"So, when you look at the night sky you are typically seeing light that left a star millions of years ago, if not billions. Right there, with your own eyes. How does that fit with your 6,000 year old universe?"

The ladies then decided to wrap up the conversation, back away and, no doubt, to also cross my address from their potential converts list.

The point here being two-fold:

  1. Facts and logic will never, ever convince a dogmatist. They are impervious.

  2. There is an unfathomanable number of planets out there, many being habitable by humans. And they will forever be out of our reach. Planet Earth is all we've got.

Take a bunch of rat-bag religionists from a prosperity-gospelling Prime Minister through to the "family-values" fornicators in the National Party and leave them to look after the environment. What could go wrong?

Should you ever think that breathable air and potable water are in safe hands then please have a look at their track record. Their one true god is mammon.

Since when does religious dogma excuse blatant bastardry and environmental criminality? Humans are an experimental branch of mother nature's evolutionary tree. These fossils we have allowed to be in charge are busily sawing through that branch. God's (sic) ultimate creation is sending itself extinct and the LNP is only speeding up that process.

I've covered religion and politics. So, sex? Tell the L/NP to fuck off at the upcoming election.
